Potential partners
Unlike dairy goats, it is not feasible to carry out breed development of meat goats
with networks of smallholders. The partners that we are looking for should be keeping
substantial numbers of goats on free-grazing:
- Individual farmers should ideally be aiming for at least 200 breeding females, but
depending on the area, we could consider farmers with at least 50 breeding females.
- We can also work with groups of medium-sized farmers. Each member of the group should
be aiming for at least 25 breeding females, and the total for the whole group should
be at least 200 breeding females.
- CBOs or NGOs working with pastoralists may also be interested in partnership.
We anticipate that the the starting point for developing the Kabulya Meat Goat will
be low-grade Boer crosses - mainly 25% to 50% Boer ancestry, but even lower crosses
could be used. Mixtures with other breeds could also work, as long as the non-East
African ancestry does not exceed 50%.

Our aim is to develop a breed that is resilient under Ugandan conditions, but also
fast- growing so that it makes meat production a profitable enterprise.
